From Hearth to Heart: Kindly Viera Opens Bakery Beneath the Boughs

Nestled among the whispering willows of the Central Shroud, a gentle scent of cinnamon and clove now dances on the morning breeze. The source? A newly opened bakery known as Carrot Patch Pastries, run by none other than Miss Karotte Cake, a kindly Viera matron whose warm drawl and even warmer pies have already begun to charm the hearts of local Wood Wailers and wandering adventurers alike. At a venerable hundred summers, Karotte carries with her not only decades of wisdom, but a maternal presence rare and treasured in these oft-troubled times. “Sugar,” she says with a wink and a twinkle, “ain’t nothin’ a good scone can’t soothe.”Tucked off a mossy trail near Bentbranch Meadows, the bakery appears more like a storybook cottage than a storefront—its eaves adorned with drying herbs and wood-carved trimmings, and its windows aglow with soft amber light even in the dusky hours. Inside, shelves brim with all manner of baked goods: honey-glazed oatcakes, thistleberry turnovers, dense loaves of stoneground rye, and a curious “Chocobo Bun” shaped, quite fittingly, like the creature it honors.“I wanted it to feel like comin’ home,” Karotte says, pressing flour-dusted hands into her apron. “Even if folk never had one, I want ‘em to step through my door and know they’re welcome, no questions asked. Gridanian, Duskwight, Lalafell or Garlean—I don’t mind none. You hungry? You’re mine now.”She laughs, rich and mellow, before serving this reporter a slice of her signature moon-sugar apple tart. (In the interest of journalistic integrity: it is, without doubt, the best tart I have ever tasted.)Local reception has been swift and full of cheer. Wulfgar, a senior Wood Wailer stationed nearby, was seen departing the bakery with a sticky bun in each hand. “Figured I’d grab one for my patrol partner,” he explained, “but I’m thinkin’ he’ll have to settle for crumbs.”Even the notoriously reserved conjurers of Stillglade Fane have been known to slip in under the guise of “botanical inspection.” One such white-robed visitor, who asked to remain unnamed, confessed with a soft chuckle: “Her lemon balm biscuits do wonders for the nerves after spellcasting. I suspect she knows it, too.”Karotte, for her part, remains humble. “I just bake what I know, darlin’. Grew up learnin’ from the old does in Hhusatahwi. They taught me love’s in the kneadin’. Magic? I leave that to y’all.”As word spreads across the Black Shroud, one thing is certain: Carrot Patch Pastries is more than a bakery. It is a balm, a hearth, a place where the weary may rest—and rise again, lighter than before.

Viera Welcomes All to ‘Carrot Patch Pastries' with Fresh Pies and Warm Smiles

"If you’re within a malm of the Shroud and you don’t stop by Carrot Patch Pastries, you’re doin’ yourself a disservice. This ain’t just a place to eat—it’s a place to feel. And I, Moryn of Stillglade Fane, who once claimed the perfect scone didn’t exist, am now humbly eatin’ my words (and maybe another turnover).Five stars. And a warm nap afterward."

Carrot Patch Pastries Opens Its Doors! A Taste of Tural Blooms in the Twelveswood.

"I only meant to stop in for a quick bite before the ferry, but gods help me—I stayed near an hour, just sittin’ with a cup of willowbark tea and the best apple tart I’ve had in my life. Miss Karotte called me ‘sugar’ and asked after my journey like we were old friends. The whole place smells like home. I left with a full belly and a lighter heart. I’ll be back. Stars above, I’ll be back."

Trivia

 HOBBIES

  • Tending Bees – She keeps a few hives tucked away behind her bakery. The honey is for her pastries, but she also finds the bees’ quiet rhythm calming. She claims talking to them helps her "think sweeter."

  • Recipe Journaling – Karotte keeps a worn leather-bound book filled with handwritten recipes, Turalian family secrets, little doodles, and saucy commentary in the margins ("Too dry! Like that one Elezen suitor from '62").

  • Herb Foraging – She enjoys wandering the Shroud collecting wild herbs, berries, and edible flowers to use in her baking. She’s developed a sharp eye for rare ingredients (and a sharper tongue for anyone who picks irresponsibly).

 DISLIKES

  • Soggy crusts

  • People who can't take a joke

  • Crowded cities

 ABILITIES/SKILLS

  • Merchant Savvy - Running a traveling bakery cart has made Karotte shrewd with gil, bartering, and reading customers. She knows when someone’s trying to swindle her and how to upsell a tart without saying a word.

  • Herbal Lore & Kitchen Alchemy -Years of foraging in the Shroud and Tural have taught her how to blend herbs and ingredients not just for flavor, but for effect. Her food can soothe nerves, relieve minor ailments, and even boost stamina (or courage!) when prepared with intention.

Frequented Locations

You’ll find Miss Karotte most days in the heart of the Black Shroud, tucked into her cozy shop Carrot Patch Pastries, just off the woodland path near Bentbranch Meadows. Follow the scent of fresh bread and cinnamon, and you’ll know you’re close. On market days or festival moons, keep an eye out in the city-states—her merchant cart’s as well-traveled as she is, often seen parked near Hawkers' Alley, Sapphire Avenue, or the Forgotten Knight’s square, always with a line and a smile.

Just a short stroll down the mossy path from Carrot Patch Pastries sits a humble wooden cottage with painted shutters and a chalkboard hanging on the door. Inside, it’s a single sunlit room filled with worn desks, a patchwork rug, and the scent of old books and fresh-baked muffins. Twice a week, Miss Karotte opens the doors to little ones from around the Shroud, teaching letters, numbers, and kindness in equal measure. Lessons come with sweetbread breaks, and every child leaves knowing their sums, their letters, and that someone believes in them. As she says, “A full mind and a full belly’ll carry a child farther than boots ever will.”

From Western Roots to Hearthfire Treats: A Conversation with Karotte Cake of Carrot Patch Pastries

“Well now, I never did reckon I’d end up runnin’ a bakery way out here in the Shroud, but fate’s got a funny way of kneadin’ us into shape, don’t it? When I first stepped foot in Eorzea, I didn’t have much more than a satchel of spices and a heart full o’ stories—but folk here, they opened their arms quicker than a hot oven. Startin’ Carrot Patch Pastries was my way of givin’ back, of settlin’ roots deep and sweet."

Karotte Cake is a woman of contrasts: a 100-year-old Rava with the youth of spirit to sass a Lalafell merchant into behaving, and the depth of wisdom to hush a room just by lifting her gaze. Her accent is thick and slow as treacle, the kind that wraps around a room like a warm quilt—and every word she says seems stitched with meaning, even the cheeky ones.“Oh honey,” she told me, waving off a compliment with a flour-dusted hand, “I ain’t nothin’ but a woman who knows how to feed folks and call ‘em on their nonsense. That’s a full-time job right there.”

She laughs often—low and musical—and she’s not afraid to speak plain. When a local hunter barged in mid-interview demanding “something quick,” Karotte didn’t miss a beat. “You want quick, you best be eatin’ jerky,” she called back. “Round here, we do things proper.” Then, with a smile sweet as cinnamon, she handed him a still-warm oat scone “to teach him patience.”

It’s not just wit that defines Karotte—it’s warmth. She has the rare kind of presence that makes you want to set down your burdens and stay a while. She remembers names. She notices when someone’s posture says more than their words. “People carry heaviness like it’s stitched into their coats,” she told me, pouring tea without being asked. “But you give ‘em a space that smells like sugar and safety, and they’ll start to loosen at the seams.”

The Cart Broke Down (Again)

While making her rounds through the Shroud, her trusty merchant cart throws a wheel (or maybe a stubborn chocobo takes off mid-delivery). Stranded outside of town, she waves down the nearest soul for help — offering baked goods, a sharp-tongued thank-you, and maybe a bit more conversation than expected.

Flour, Fire, and Forest Spirits

Strange things have been happening around her bakery in the Shroud — spoiled ingredients, vanishing loaves, whispers in the trees. The locals say it’s just mischievous elementals, but she suspects something deeper... and she needs a few brave (or at least curious) folks to help her get to the bottom of it
